Prolapse

Uterine, bladder, vaginal, womb prolapse – these are all serious conditions resulting in incontinence, difficulty in passing bowel motions and difficulties with intercourse. Often surgery is seen as the only option for these debilitating conditions – unfortunately surgery (continence surgery or hysterectomies) can sometimes lead to even further complications.

A hysterectomy is commonly performed when a prolapse is repaired. This is where one of the organs in the pelvis loses its support and falls downwards into the vagina. Around one in five Australian women will have had a hysterectomy by the age of 50.

However, in recent years there has been a rethink about the necessity for so many of these operations and there has been greater recognition that some women suffer unwelcome effects after a hysterectomy, including further incontinence, back problems and a loss of sexual enjoyment. Some doctors will simply repair the prolapse by lifting the organ up and securing it in its proper place. Unfortunately the prolapse can recur after both forms of surgery in later years.

The good news is that a prolapse can be prevented and often reversed in the early stages.

Dr Kegel found that through using resistance exercise it was possible to not only eliminate stress incontinence effectively, it was also possible to reverse a uterine prolapse by as much as 5 to 7cm.

Dr Kegel invented the idea of performing pelvic exercises against resistance. This is why the exercises are commonly called Kegel exercises. And they were never meant to be done without resistance.

“After the birth of my first child I noticed things looked and felt very different ‘down there’. I could see and feel my vaginal wall and it was almost like things were falling out. I assumed this was a normal consequence of childbirth and didn’t bother having my 6-week post-birth checkup with my midwife. It wasn’t until a couple of years later that I learnt from a friend with the same problem that this was most likely a vaginal prolapse. It had seemed to improve slightly over time, but my husband often commented that things weren’t the same as before. I am overjoyed to say that after only a few weeks of using the Kegelmaster everything went back to where it should be”.
